Margie Long Obituary

On Friday October 16, 2020, Margie S Long, loving wife and mother of three children passed away at the age of 84.

Born, Margie Smith on February 18, 1936 in Ophir, KY to Russell and Ida Mae Smith. She married Paul E Long on June 13, 1955 and together they raised three children, James Ray, Mark Tipton and daughter Elizabeth Caroline Doty. She adored her grandchildren – Dustin Long, Jessica Long Wright, Morgan Long, Scott Long, Amanda Long and Clayton Doty. She rejoiced the days when each of her great grandchildren Jax, Ry, and Wes Long were born. She could never have enough pictures and requested updates frequently! Margie and Paul moved from Wayland, KY to Mt. Vernon, IL in 1968 and living in the same home for over 50 years until relocating to Southwest Missouri in 2018, to be nearer family.

Margie was a teacher in practice and at heart. Most of her 35 year career she taught 5th & 6th grade students. She achieved her Masters Degree in Education during her career and was always teaching, whether it was in the classroom or demonstrating one of her many hobbies. She was an excellent chef and loved to cook with her children and grandchildren. Her many hobbies included sewing, painting, crafts of all kinds including soapmaking and tending a huge garden with Paul! These words from her granddaughter, Jessica, sum up who Margie (MeMe) was to those who loved, and were loved by her: “She taught me how to love, how to cook, how to be a good wife, how to be a smart ass, how to have a successful career, how to be kind to strangers, how to have faith in hard times, how to always put family first, how important a good education is, and last but certainly not least how to be unapologetically yourself.” She will be missed by all who knew her.

A private family service will be held Wednesday October 21, 2020 at Ferry Funeral home in Nevada Missouri.

In lieu of flowers Margie requested donations be made to the Jefferson County (Illinois) Retired Teachers Scholarship Fund.
