Mary Prewitt Obituary

Mary Louise (McCarthy) Prewitt, 93, formerly of Walker, MO passed away on Thursday, April 25, 2019 at Barone Alzheimer’s Care Center in Nevada.  Mary was born August 9, 1925 in Chillicothe, MO to Nolan Francis and Coila Ada (Lafferty) McCarthy.

Mary graduated from Chillicothe High School and moved to Kansas City with her sister Blanche upon graduation and did factory work there for a short period of time.   While visiting her parents in Nevada, she attended a dance where she met Forest Compton Prewitt and they were married November 16, 1947. Mary and Forest began their life together on a farm near Walker, Missouri where they raised five children: Nancy Holmes (Steve), Helen Prewitt, Tom Prewitt, Duane Prewitt (Kris), Wayne Prewitt (Teresa).

In addition to raising five children, Mary was a fabulous cook and she loved to entertain.  This made her an excellent foods leader at the Walker 4-H Club for 42 years.  She was a leader of that club as well as a foods judge at the Vernon County Youth Fair.  She was also well known for her legendary pies, bread and jelly which she baked for a local restaurant and many local charities.  She enjoyed playing bingo and spending time with her children and grandchildren.  She attended the Walker Christian Church.

She is survived by her five children; thirteen grandchildren: Jessica (Holmes) Thompson, Alex Holmes, Christopher Prewitt, Kelly (Prewitt) Young, Carrie Prewitt, Matt Prewitt, Grace (Prewitt) Martin, Caleb Prewitt, Rachael (Prewitt) Fetters, Rebecca (Prewitt) Sorrels, Ruth (Prewitt) Steward, Mary Elizabeth Prewitt and Thomas Prewitt, and eleven great-grandchildren: John Paul Burns, Grant Stolte, Izzy Prewitt, Lilly Prewitt, Helen Fetters, Harrison Fetters and Hans Fetters, Maren Steward, Naomi Sorrels, Drake Young, and Chase Young. She is preceded in death by her husband, Forest Prewitt; one daughter, Frances Jeanette Prewitt; siblings, Virginia Spears, Leo McCarthy, Blanche Waggener, James, McCarthy, and Donald McCarthy.

Graveside services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 4, 2019 at Newton Burial Park in Nevada with Mark Mitchell officiating.  The family will receive friends from 5-7:00 p.m. on Friday evening at Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada.

In lieu of flowers the family is requesting donations be made to the Walker 4-H Club and can be made in care of Ferry Funeral Home.

The family would like to offer their sincerest thanks to the dedicated, compassionate and caring staff of the Barone Alzheimer’s Care Center and Avalon Hospice.
