Jack Edward Smotherman, 86, of Nevada, passed away on Monday, July 27, 2026. Jack was born on December 15, 1939, in Kansas City, MO to Guy and Isabella (Doyle) Smotherman.
Jack moved to Nevada with his family in 1950 and is a graduate of Nevada High School class of 1956. Shortly after high school Jack joined the Navy and proudly served his country in the Vietnam War and The Cuban Missile Crisis, ending his 16-year career as a BM2. Before retirement, Jack worked as a Real Estate Broker in Kansas City from 1983-2001. For 15 years, one of Jack’s greatest hobbies was to umpire baseball and softball games, from Little League up to the college level.
Survivors include one daughter, Vicki McLaurin (Billy); five grandchildren, Clayton Shaw, Caleb Shaw, Cathryn Shaw, Ashlee McLaurin, and Blake Lambret; a sister, Patricia “Patty Lou” Holding; a nephew, Mike (Paula) Holding; and a son-in-law, Sandy (Tammy) Shaw. Jack was preceded in death by his parents and his daughter, Jacquelene (Smotherman) Shaw.
Funeral services with Military Honors will be at 11:00 am, Monday August 3, 2026, at Ferry Funeral Home, with Father Peter Savidge officiating. The family will receive friends from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. prior to the service. Interment will be in the Fort Scott National Cemetery, Ft. Scott, KS.
