James Richard “Rick or Ricky” Berten, age 57, of Nevada. Mo. passed away on Thursday, August 21, 2025 at Freeman Hospital, in Joplin, MO. Rick was born on September 24, 1967 in Kansas City, MO to James Eldon Berten and Nancy Patchen.
Rick was raised in the Kansas City, MO area. He had a strong passion for construction and especially enjoyed working with sheetrock - taping and mudding. He liked to go fishing, enjoyed BBQ cookouts, and spending quality time with both friends and family. Rick was a diehard Chief’s fan and loved rooting for them as they played the game. Above all he was a family man and loved his kids and grandkids. Rick was a strong, kind soul and he always gave the shirt off his back no matter what. Rick’s presence lit up a whole room, and without a doubt always made you either laugh or smile. Rick has a huge family who loves him dearly.
Rick is survived by his mother, Nancy Patchen, Independence, MO; three sons, Melvin Tincher, Nevada, MO, Gary (Alexia) Berten, Chanute, KS and Clyde Berten, Sheldon, MO; two daughters, Ashley Berten, St. Louis, MO and Janie Tincher, Enid, OK; four brothers, Frank Berten, David (Brenda) Berten, Jimmy Berten, and Robbie Robertson; two sisters, Tammy Johnson and Cindy (Dean) Chastain; 12 grandchildren, Rachel, Hanalei, Rocky, Sonny, Christan, Kirstan, Kolbin, Ava, Legacie, Tymber, Brylin, and Karson; as well as a large extended family. He was preceded in death by his father, and the love of his life, Tina Tincher.
The funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, August 29, 2025, at Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada, MO with Rick Forgey officiating. Interment will follow in Click Cemetery, Nevada, MO. The family will receive friends from 1-2:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.
