James Elmer “Jim” Simmons, 88, Nevada, MO passed away on Monday, May 25, 2026, at Moore-Few Care Center in Nevada following a lengthy illness. Jim was born August 19, 1937, in Denver, CO to Fred D. and Grace E. (Nott) Simmons. He married Sally Kathryn Nixon on October 7, 1967, in Kansas City, MO and she survives of the home.
Jim grew up in a hard-working farm family near Highland, KS and was a proud member of the Iowa Tribe of Kansas and Nebraska. He graduated from Central High School in Kansas City, MO in 1955. Following high school, he enlisted in his beloved US Marine Corps where he proudly served until his discharge in 1964. Jim then moved back to Kansas City and began working in the finance business. In 1974 his agricultural background led to his career as a credit representative for Allis-Chalmers Credit Corporation until his retirement to Nevada in 1994. His memberships included VFW and American Legion.
In addition to his wife Sally, he is survived by two children: Rusty Simmons of Falls City, NE and Sherri Barker of Nevada, MO; five grandchildren: Robert Simmons of Titusville, FL, Nakia Moore (Chris) of New Salem, PA, Teaini Thompson (Shane) of Grindstone, PA, Cody Barker (Morgan) of Lee’s Summit, MO and Dalton Barker (Bre) of Lockwood, MO; 11 great-grandchildren: Shaylee Simmons, Jameson Simmons, Braxton Moore, Zayn Moore, Aaliyah Moore, Hayzil Smith, Avalynn Thompson, Octavia Thompson, Kinley Barker, Cole Barker, and Charlotte Barker; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother Doyle Simmons.
Memorial services with Military Funeral Honors will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, June 5, 2026, at Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada with Pastor Clarence Newman officiating. The family will receive friends from 1-2:00 p.m. prior to the service.
Memorials are suggested in his name to St. Jude Children's Hospital, Shriners Children’s Hospital, or the Marine Corp Toy’s for Tots c/o Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada.
