Joan McFarland Obituary

The only thing harder than losing someone from this physical world,

is losing them to Dementia first.

Waneta Joan Holland McFarland passed away on March 25th, at Via Christi Village in Pittsburg, KS. Joan was born December 5, 1936 in Sheldon, MO to Floyd Earl “Boots” and Gladys Neoma Cliffman Holland.

Joan grew up in the Bronaugh, MO area and graduated from High School in 1954. She moved to Kansas City and worked for Hallmark before returning to the Moundville area in 1958 to marry Thomas Clemson McFarland and raise a family, all of whom survive: Randy (Nance), Raymore, MO, Deb McFarland, Nevada, MO, and Justin (Tera) of Moundville, MO.

Joan spent over 30 years in the Financial Industry working for First Finance, Thornton Bank and Farm & Home Savings and Loan in Nevada. She then retired from Central Bank of Branson in 2000. Joan is listed as a noteworthy finance company executive by Marquis Who’s Who. She was also a member of the Nevada Chamber of Commerce, Soroptimist International and Bushwhacker Business and Professional Women.

Joan cherished spending time with her family, the more it grew, the better. She enjoyed quilting, bowling, dancing, reading, working both crossword and jigsaw puzzles, and sports.  She loved March Madness, filling out her bracket, and rooting for the underdogs.

Joan was preceded in death by her parents, sister Beverly J. Reed and brother Robert E. Holland, brothers-in-law Guy Reed, Gary Cherry, and Erwin Brannan.

Along with her children, Joan is survived by sisters; Phyllis Cherry, Kansas City, MO, Gracelyn Hinds (Ron), Ozark, MO, Mary Hewitt (Jim) Meriden, KS, and Gladys Brannan of Bronaugh, MO, and many nieces, nephews, friends, and business associates.

Joan was preceded in death by and is survived by many family members on the McFarland side that she cared for deeply.

Also surviving are Grandchildren Miranda Steffen, (Mike), Kansas City, MO, Kayla Roberts (Ryan), Peculiar, MO, Lindsay Killam (Aaron), Ozark, MO, Megan Clark (Tony), Claremont, CA, Hannah McFarland, St. Paul, MN, Jenni Bruckner (Jacob) Coldwater, KS, Reed McFarland (Kourtney) Paola, KS, and Audra McFarland (partner Madison Simmons), Seattle, WA.

Great Grandchildren surviving; Melody, McKenna and Mae Steffen, Alexis and Tucker Roberts, Beckett Clark, Rey and James Zornes, Emma and Peyton Bruckner, and Roycin and Sloane McFarland.

Joan was a member of the Moundville United Methodist Church. Cremation is planned with a casual visitation/celebration of life to be held at Ferry Funeral Home on Wednesday, April 1, 2026 from 2:00-4:00 PM. Family will gather afterwards at the home of Justin and Tera McFarland of Moundville.

In lieu of flowers, Joan has requested donations be made to the Moundville United Methodist Church, Alzheimer's Association, or Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice of Pittsburg, KS. c/o Ferry Funeral Home. Her ashes will be spread at various places she loved and a marker is placed next to her parents at Worsley Cemetery.

Mom – We love you and we will miss you terribly but now you can always “Remember when….”
