Obituary

John William Winters, 40, Warrensburg, MO passed away on Thursday, August 31, 2023 in Warrenburg. John was born July 17, 1983 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Kansas City, MO. His parents were Jack B. Winters and Mary R. Winters. John married Erin Smith on November 5, 2016 and they had one baby girl, Zoey.

John grew up on the Flying “W” Ranch in Garden City, MO. He attended preschool at Kinder Castle, then attended school in Archie for three years before moving to Harrisonville where he attended the Mennonite Christian School through the 7th grade, after which he moved to Warrensburg and graduated from Warrensburg High School. John was nominated for West Point which he declined in favor of attending the University of Missouri in Columbia, MO where he received a  National Merit Scholarship and a Bright Flight.  He then transferred to the University of Central Missouri in Columbia, graduating with a degree in accounting.

John was an avid sports fan. He loved the Kansas City Chiefs and Royals almost as much as his family. On October 2, 2021 he organized and sponsored a family outing to the Royals game. He also enjoyed board games with his friends on the internet and at home. John was always ready for a game of Axis and Allies.

John accepted Jesus as his savoir at the age 8 and was baptized at First Baptist Church in Archie. Even in the last weeks of his life he was pleased to tell others about God the Father and Jesus Christ. He was a caring, kind, and loving person to friends, family, and those in need, but not without sin. He will be greatly missed until we are reunited in heaven. The night he died he said, “Mom, get ready, I think Jesus is coming for us today.” Psalm 24-27, John 17:3, I John 5:4.

He was preceded in death by his father, Jack Bailey Winters; grandparents, Fred and Agatha Winters, and grandparents, Rowland and Priscilla Bass; and a half-brother, Reverend Frederick Harland Winters. Survivors include his daughter, Zoey; mother, Mary Winters, Warrensburg, MO; brothers, Karl Winters, Jack Winters, Zachary Winters, and Andrew Winters; and a sister, Anna Sublett; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 3, 2023 at Grover Park Baptist Church in Warrensburg, MO with Rev. Francis O’Donnell officiating. Interment will be held Tuesday, September 5 at 2:00 p.m. at Click Cemetery in Nevada.
