Mary Dahmer Obituary

              Mary Marie (Cowan) Dahmer, age 94, of Nevada, passed away Monday, October 4, 2021 after a lengthy illness.  She was born on September 30, 1927 in Crawford County, KS near Walnut, KS to Charles Oscar Cowan and Grace Olive (Boileau) Cowan.  On September 5, 1948, she was married to Glenn “Plute” Dean Dahmer in Mapleton, KS and he preceded her in death on September 28, 2003.

      Mary was raised on a farm in Bourbon County, KS.  She graduated from Fulton High School.  Following graduation, she worked at Western Insurance Companies in Ft. Scott, KS from 1944 to 1948.  After her sons were born, she went to work for Joseph L. Pohl Contractor, INC in 1957.  In 1970, she was elected Secretary of the corporation and was also named Office Manager for the firm.  She continued in that capacity until her retirement in 2012, completing 55 years of service. 

      She was a member of First Christian Church of Nevada where she taught Sunday School for a number of years.  In more recent years, she began attending the Methodist Church of Nevada and was a constituent member.  Her hobbies were knitting and quilting. 

      Mary was a very devoted Mom and Grannie and loved dearly by her sons, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.  Mary enjoyed outings of all kinds, especially when visiting family and friends. She enjoyed traveling and treasured her trips with her son to Colorado to visit family as well as her Branson trips with her siblings. More recently, when she wasn’t able to travel distances, she enjoyed her monthly outings to Ft. Scott. 

      Mary is survived by grandchildren Amy (Dahmer) Clausen and husband Derrick of Independence, MO, Amber (Dahmer) Jenkins and Jeff Pearish of Nevada, and Aaron Dahmer of Nevada; great-grandchildren Kendra (Bradley) Meyers of Joplin, MO, Jaycee Jenkins, Callee Jenkins, Wyatt Jenkins, Allie Marie Dahmer and Addison Mae Dahmer of Nevada; great-great grandchildren Axel and Nash; daughter-in-law Candi Dahmer of Nevada, brother Bill Cowan of Nevada, sister Charlene Bruns of Ft. Scott, and sister-in-law Faye Cowan of Ft. Scott; and many nieces and nephews.  

      She was preceded in death by her husband Glenn and sons Gregg Dahmer in 2019 and Brent Dahmer in 1982; siblings Metta Walker and her husband Mark, Irmal Smith and her husband Louis, Floyd “Buck” Cowan, Ruth Walker and husband Jake, Pauline Norris and husband Everett “Soapy”, and Opal Brillhart and husband Ed; brother-in-law Maurice Bruns and sister-in-law Norma Cowan; and her parents.

         Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 12, 2021 at Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada. The family will receive friends from 6-7:00 p.m. on Monday evening at the funeral home.  

      Any donations can be made in her name to the NRMC Foundation in care of the Ferry Funeral Home.
