Nellie Groves Obituary

Nellie Faye Groves, 86 of Nevada, passed away on Friday, January 4, 2024 at Mercy Hospital in Joplin.  She was born on December 5, 1937 in Nevada, MO to Charles C. Monttie and Rosa Monttie.  She was married to Robert Leroy Groves and he preceded her in death in 1989.

Nellie was a lifelong resident of Nevada and attended Nevada schools until 9th grade.  She was a homemaker, wife, mother and grandmother.  She raised four children and loved spoiling her grandchildren.  Nellie was a faithful member of Bible Baptist Church.  She loved hearing Jerry Pyle preach and faithfully attended until her health declined.  Nellie enjoyed reading, bald eagles, word search puzzles, playing on her tablets, playing with her puppies and spending time with her family.  Thanksgiving and Christmas were her favorite times of year.

Survivors include four children, Debbie Kerns (Junior) of Nevada, Janet Thomas (Randy) of Nevada, Robert Leroy Groves, Jr, Nevada, and Patricia Bounds of Joplin, MO.  Four grandchildren, Leroy Kerns, Jr, Sherrie Warden, Karl Douglas, and David Eaton, four great granddaughters, two brothers, Robert Mottie (Judy), College Station, TX and Karl Monttie of California, a sister, Betty of Kansas City, MO and several nieces and nephews.  Nellie was preceded in death by her sister Mary Richeshell, a brother, Marvin Monttie and an infant sister, Ida Mae.

Nellie’s favorite song was “Teddy Bear” by Red Sovine.  This song represented her well.  The unconditional love sang about in the song encapsulates the love she had for anyone and everyone.

A Memorial Service will be held Sunday, January 14th, at 10 AM at Bible Baptist Church, 18770 E. 54 Hwy, Nevada MO.
