Rex Leonard Long, 63, Nevada, MO passed away surrounded by his family on Tuesday, June 22, 2021 at Medicalodges of Nevada following a lengthy illness. Rex was born November 13, 1957 in St. Joseph, MO to John L. and Rosalie M. (McNeece) Long. He was united in marriage to Lisa Leann Mealman on February 4, 1984 in Nevada and she survives of the home.
Rex was raised in Dade County and later came to Vernon County graduating from Walker High School in 1976. He served in the United States Army for two years plus an additional 14 years in the Missouri National Guard. A lifelong resident of Vernon County, he resided in Walker for 15 years before coming to Nevada where he continued to live. Rex worked as an aide at the Nevada Habilitation Center and at Heartland Hospital for many years. He enjoyed being with his family, watching his children and grandchildren grow up, and was known as an avid Kansas City Chiefs fan.
In addition to his wife Lisa, survivors include three daughters, Trista Winter, Nevada, Erika Long, Nevada, Tiffani Biggs (Anthony), San Antonio, TX; eight grandchildren, Michael, Bryson, Keagan, Allysen, Evan, Emily, Mason, and Olivia; one brother, Ronnie Long, Clearwater, KS; one sister, Lillian Long, El Dorado Springs, MO; mother-in-law, Cathy Mealman, Nevada; two step-brothers, Randy Flemming, Nevada, and Delbert Flemming (Almeda), Wichita, KS; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; stepmother, Jewel Long; two sisters, Aleca Taylor, and Lennie Stirewalt; two brothers, Johnnie Long, and Hayden Long; stepbrother, Jerry Flemming; and his father-in-law, Alfred Mealman.
Funeral services and Military Funeral Honors will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 26, 2021 at Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada. Interment will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, June 28th at the National Cemetery in Ft. Scott, KS. The family will receive friends from 1-2:00 p.m.on Saturday, prior to the service at the funeral home.
