Dr. Richard Brown, 79, passed away on Thursday, April 23, 2020 at Nevada Regional Medical Center in Nevada. Richard was born September 26, 1940 in Bowie, TX to Lester E. and Lois O. (Lancaster) Brown.
Professor Brown was at Cottey College from 1981 to 2006. He received a Bachelor Music (1964), a Master of Arts in Spanish (1967), and a Doctor of Philosophy in Spanish (1978) at Texas Tech University. He has done supplementary studies at the Universidad Nacional de Mexico (Mexico), the Universidad de Madrid (Spain) and the Universidade Federal de Bahia (Brazil).
Professor Brown speaks English, Spanish and Portuguese, reads French, has traveled to more than 40 countries in Western Europe and the Americans, resided in Brazil for seven years, resided in Jamaica for one year, and has spent several months in various Spanish-speaking countries.
Besides having taught Spanish at Texas Tech University and the University of Minnesota, Duluth, Professor Brown has taught English as a foreign language (ESL) at the Universidade Católica de São Paulo , Brazil. In addition, he was the assistant vice director of courses at the União Cultural Brasil-Estados Unidos in São Paulo, and much later he worked briefly for the Organization of American States as a foreign language consultant to the Jamaican Ministry of Public Service.
Music has long been of special interest to Dr. Brown. Over the years he played the bassoon in various university musical ensembles, the Lubbock Symphony Orchestra, the Austin Symphony Orchestra and the American Wind Symphony Orchestra of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
In the autumn of 2000, Dr. Brown was selected to appear in Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers (sixth edition); then again in the eighth and nineth editions.
