Sharon Faye Kunkel, 68, Nevada, MO passed from this life on Sunday, May 24, 2020 following a lengthy illness. Sharon was born October 4, 1951 in Nevada, MO to Troy Franklin and Nina Allene (Phillips) Norris. She was united in marriage to Allan Earnest Kunkel on April 13, 1974 in Nevada, MO and he preceded her in death on September 22, 1987.
Sharon attended Nevada High School in Nevada, MO and graduated with her senior class of 1969. Her first job was at Nevada High School as secretary to the COE coordinator and after high school she worked at Western Insurance Company in Ft Scott, KS and later got a job as a medical transcriptionist. Sharon met Allan on a blind date that was set up by Allan’s brother (Sam Kunkel) of which Sharon wasn’t sure about as other blind dates had been bad. Their first date was a success and they tried to spend as much time as possible with each other after that. On April 13th, 1974 she married Allan E Kunkel at St. Paul Lutheran church in Nevada, MO. She loved doing transcription work and did so for hospitals and clinics around Nevada, MO area for many years. She also studied reflexology and massage therapy. Sharon loved spending as much time as possible with family and enjoyed gardening, cooking and sewing with many afghans, quilts, dresses, etc. made for family and friends over the years.
In October 2017, she was diagnosed with stage four Ovarian Cancer. Through the last three years she fought bravely and did not give up. She showed strength and determination while fighting. The last month prior to her passing has been the ultimate fight and she did not give up easily. Sharon will never be forgotten as she is the true example of strength, love and devotion.
She is survived by two children; a son, Jamie Kunkel (Rachel), Schell City, MO, and a daughter, Jacquelin Spratt (David), Harrisonville; 11 grandchildren, Hayley, Shelby, Kylee, Rylee, Trenton, Courtney, Peyton, Saxon, Megan, Dustin, and Erin; and six great-grandchildren; a brother, Jim Norris (Pat), Nevada, and a sister, Carolyn Doolin (Brad), Richards, MO; several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, May 29, 2020 at Mt. Zion Cemetery in Schell City, MO with Pastor Dan Gayman officiating.
“In lieu of flowers” memorial are suggested to Vernon County Cancer Relief c/o Ferry Funeral Home.
***Beginning on May 4th there will no longer be a statewide limitation on the number of people attending funerals or visitations, however those in attendance will be asked to maintain social distancing, and that people are welcome to and, indeed, are encouraged to wear face mask to protect themselves and others.
